Foreword

The book you hold in your hands is rare, covering a subject matter that is hardly discussed by the global church, let alone by the church in Asia. This is a cutting-edge attempt to call the church to a neglected area of the Missio Dei.

Credit must be given to anyone who dares to dream of a home that is strong enough to be on the mission of establishing God’s kingdom by reaching the unchurched, when its very survival is at stake.

Dr. P. C. Mathew is a man on a clear mission. He knows that what he is investing his life in (and that of his whole family) is not only prescribed by the Bible, but is also possible, as challenging as this may be.

This book is a glimpse of what has been brewing in PC’s heart and that of his wife, Ciby, for several decades. They don’t just theologize and theorize about the issues discussed, they courageously act out their convictions in an environment that is often hostile to the Christian way of family living. My wife, Rose, and I have had the privilege of visiting PC in Bangalore, where Urban India Ministries (UIM), which he leads, is located. We watched how they lived as a Christian family. We observed his passionate and dedicated ministry team in action in the field. They are training their staff and their families to touch other families all across India through their vast array of ministries.

It is my privilege to serve with PC in the Global Advisory Team of the Family Challenge movement (PC is also the national facilitator for India) that focuses on partnering with the Global Church in building families according to God’s design, equipping them to be agents of change, and impacting their communities for Christ. PC was instrumental in crafting our theological statement on the ‘Missional Family’.

It is the reservoir of biblical convictions and the experience of seeing God’s unfolding plans in touching thousands of lives through UIM that will most likely impact you as you wade through this book.

It comes at an historic hour, when the church world wide begins to awaken - after nearly 200 years of neglect -to the need to give urgent attention to building healthy families in their midst. The church is regaining its strength in order to fulfill its Missio Dei. I personally pray that God will use this book to further fuel the momentum of this focus by challenging theologians and scholars to refine the theology of the missional family further and inspire the Church to give priority to developing healthy families who work for Christ’s purposes.

Let’s dream together to see Christ’s body becoming more missional, whereby ‘each family that is represented in the Church understands and lives the missional purpose of God’
